Northern Algae was founded by Mark and Simon — two engineers (Mark - Building Service & Simon - Environmental) from the North East of England with a background in delivering various engineering O&M and projects, successfully completed two R&D projects for the Royal Air Force that had a requirement to minimise carbon footprint for the RAF. Working on carbon capture technology, they discovered that microalgae was the most powerful, versatile and environmentally friendly solution available — capable of absorbing up to 50x more CO₂ than trees.

Simon saw the wide-ranging environmental reuse potential and Mark, a passionate gardener and allotment holder in North Tyneside, saw the potential for gardeners. If microalgae could capture carbon at that scale, what could it do for plants? The answer was extraordinary.
